De acordo com um estudo conduzido pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), os esforços globais de imunização salvaram aproximadamente 154 milhões de vidas ao longo dos últimos 50 anos – o equivalente a seis vidas por minuto anualmente. Segundo a pesquisa, realizada entre 1974 e 2024, 64% das vidas salvas foram de bebês.
O estudo considerou vacinas que combatem 14 tipos de doenças: difteria, Haemophilus influenzae tipo B (Hib), hepatite B, encefalite japonesa, sarampo, meningite A, coqueluche, doença pneumocócica, poliomielite, rotavírus, rubéola, tétano, tuberculose e febre amarela, que contribuíram diretamente para a redução das mortes infantis em 40% globalmente e em mais de 50% na África.
Entre as vacinas avaliadas no estudo, a vacinação contra o sarampo foi a que teve o impacto mais significativo na redução da mortalidade infantil, representando 60% das vidas salvas devido à imunização.
Em um comunicado, o diretor-geral da OMS, Tedros Adhanom, descreveu as vacinas como as invenções mais poderosas da história, tornando doenças antes temidas em preveníveis. “Com pesquisa, investimento e colaboração contínuos, podemos salvar outras milhares de vidas hoje e nos próximos 50 anos”, ressaltou Tedros.
Outra descoberta da pesquisa, que será divulgada na revista científica The Lancet, é que, para cada uma vida salva, uma média de 66 anos de saúde plena foram ganhos, totalizando 10,2 bilhões de anos de saúde plena ao longo dos 50 anos analisados.
“Esses ganhos na sobrevivência infantil destacam a importância de proteger o progresso da imunização em todos os países do mundo e acelerar os esforços para alcançar os 67 milhões de crianças que perderam uma ou mais vacinas durante os anos de pandemia”, destacou a OMS.

Após anos de queda na adesão às vacinas, o Brasil conseguiu melhorar as coberturas vacinais de 13 dos 16 imunizantes do calendário infantil em 2023, mas, apesar do avanço, os índices ainda estão abaixo das metas preconizadas pelo governo federal, que variam de 90% a 95%. Os dados foram apresentados pelo Ministério da Saúde na última terça-feira, 23, na sede do Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (UNICEF), em Brasília.
Tiveram melhora nos índices as seguintes vacinas:
– Poliomielite versão oral
– Poliomielite versão inativada
– Febre amarela
– Hepatite A
– Meningocócica C (1ª dose)
– Meningocócica C (reforço)
– Pentavalente (que protege contra difteria, tétano, coqueluche, Haemophilus influenzae b – Hib e hepatite B)
– Rotavírus
– Pneumocócica 10 (1ª dose)
– Pneumocócica 10 (reforço)
– Tríplice viral (1ª dose)
– Tríplice viral (2 dose)
– Reforço da tríplice bacteriana (DTP)
O aumento variou de 4 a 9 pontos percentuais. No caso da vacina contra a poliomielite, doença popularmente conhecida como paralisia infantil, o índice passou de 77,2% em 2022 para 84,7% em 2023. A vacina que teve a maior alta em pontos percentuais foi o reforço da tríplice bacteriana (DTP), que passou de 67,4% em 2022 para 76,8% no ano passado.
Apesar do avanço, Isabella Ballalai, diretora da Sociedade Brasileira de Imunizações (SBIm), destaca a importância de considerar melhorias nos sistemas de informação da saúde pública, que podem ter contribuído para uma precisão maior nos registros de vacinação.
Além disso, ela alerta que a cobertura média atual das 13 vacinas infantis que apresentaram aumento é um pouco acima de 70%, ainda consideravelmente abaixo da meta de 95% necessária para manter as doenças eliminadas.
Outro ponto mencionado pela especialista é a necessidade de considerar os dados por região – recorte não apresentado pelo Ministério da Saúde. “Os índices vacinais variam consideravelmente no país, o que pode criar áreas de risco, onde coberturas vacinais baixas tornam uma região mais suscetível a determinadas doenças”, explicou Isabella.
“Nós vemos com bons olhos e sabemos dos esforços do Ministério da Saúde. A aproximação com os Estados e municípios, por meio do microplanejamento, é um exemplo disso. Entretanto, os dados recentemente divulgados precisam ser olhados levando em consideração as metas vacinais e as disparidades por regiões”, afirma a diretora da SBIm.
